Virtualized HV is fully supported for virtual hardware version 9 or later VMs on hosts that support Intel VT-x and EPT or AMD-V and RVI. In particular, this means that you will be able to run 64-bit nested guests under VMware guest hypervisors. With virtualized HV enabled for the outer guest, you should be able to run any guest hypervisor that requires hardware-assisted virtualization. However, Workstation 8, Player 4, Fusion 4, and ESXi 5.0 (or later) offer virtualized HV, so that you can run guest hypervisors which require hardware-assisted virtualization. The hardware-assisted virtualization features of the physical CPU are not typically available in a VM, because most hypervisors (from VMware or others) do not virtualize HV. When running as a guest hypervisor, VMware products also require hardware-assisted virtualization for 64-bit guests on AMD hardware. VMware products require hardware-assisted virtualization for 64-bit guests on Intel hardware. Most hypervisors require hardware-assisted virtualization (HV). Running Guest Hypervisors with Virtualized HV (See for VMware's official policy on running ESXi as a guest hypervisor.) In particular, ESXi is not supported as a guest operating system, and VMware discourages running ESXi as a guest hypervisor in production environments. Note that no Type 1 hypervisors are supported as guest operating systems under any VMware product. To avoid confusion, we will not consider deeper levels of nesting here. The guest hypervisor is the hypervisor that runs within a VM. The host hypervisor is the hypervisor that runs on the physical hardware. The inner guest (or nested guest) is the VM that runs within another VM. The outer guest is the VM that runs on physical hardware. Please note that I've given this app a low usability rating because of its level of complexity. The phrase "running nested VMs" refers to running a VM inside another VM. Many consumer users will need to either seek assistance from the help file, printed documentation or support forums to insure that they get the best performance out of the app. Its also a very complicated application to setup and configure.

At $250 for a single workstation license, you need to make sure you take advantage of its 30 day trial before you buy. The biggest problems with VMware are that its expensive and complicated to setup and use.

The latest version of VMware Workstation is optimized for running Windows 8 on Windows PCs. With VMware, you can install, say, Windows 8 and give users access to it, without actually upgrading a specific machine or risking introducing an undesirable user experience into the enterprise. One of the most popular reasons why corporate customers use a virtual machine is to evaluate the next generation operating system.

It's one of the best companion apps for any technical professional as they move to the cloud. VMware Workstation's operating system support, user experience, feature set and performance will dramatically change the way you work with virtual machines. VMware Workstation is cloud capable and cloud aware. It’s a virtual workstation manager for Windows. This is one reason why I like VMWare Workstation. Getting access to the cloud can also be challenging. Yes, a native app may exist for your OS of choice, but if it doesn't or if you need to keep your OS free of clutter, things get complicated. Running the application you need on your computer isn't always as easy as you might think. Run a guest OS on your PC with this industry leading Windows app.
